In the quest for flawless skin, the beauty industry continually unveils innovative technologies that promise glowing results. One such advancement gaining traction is the LED light therapy mask. These futuristic-looking masks have been making waves in skincare circles, offering a non-invasive and effective way to address various skin concerns. But what exactly are LED light therapy masks, and how do they work their magic?

How does an LED Light Therapy Mask work?

An LED light therapy mask utilizes specific wavelengths of light to target various skin concerns and promote overall skin health. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. These types of devices emit light at different wavelengths, each wavelength having specific effects on the skin. The most common wavelengths used in LED light therapy masks because of their benefits for skincare are red, blue, and sometimes infrared light. If you want to see my Project E LED Mask in action, check out my YouTube video and my review.

How the Mask Works

LED light therapy masks are typically made of flexible material and contain multiple LED bulbs emitting the desired wavelengths of light. When worn over the face, these masks deliver targeted light therapy to the skin. Most masks come with different settings or color options, allowing users to customize their treatment based on their skin concerns. I have tried two masks by Project E Beauty. Both of these have a firm outer layer kind of like a costume mask.  The LED Light Aura Plus with the neckpiece was the first one I used. This one has all the settings a user could want, including light selection, intensity and time settings. The second one I used was the Project E Beauty Luma Mask Pro. This one is simpler to use and also lighter. This makes it quicker to use and travel with.  Check out my latest review where I compare the two.

How the lights work

Most LED Light Therapy Masks have multiple light functions. However when it comes to the light benefits for the skin, the red and blue light seem to be the most popular. Here's why:

  1. Red Light (620-700nm): Red light is known for its anti-aging properties. When applied to the skin, it penetrates the dermis and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. This can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.
  2. Blue Light (400-495nm): Blue light is often used to target acne-causing bacteria. It penetrates the pores and helps kill the bacteria that contribute to acne breakouts. Additionally, blue light therapy can help regulate sebum production, reducing oiliness and preventing future breakouts.
  3. Infrared Light (700-1200nm): Some LED masks also incorporate infrared light, which has deeper penetration into the skin compared to red light. Infrared light can improve circulation, enhance cell regeneration, and promote overall skin rejuvenation.

LED Mask Treatment Duration

The duration of each LED light therapy session can vary depending on the device and the desired results. Typically, sessions can last between 10 to 20 minutes, and I'd recommend that you use the mask consistently several times per week for optimal results. I find it best to use mine first thing in the morning before I shower and apply my skincare products.  I keep my mask in my nightstand drawer for this purpose.  On rushed mornings, like using the Luma Mask Pro because it's preset to 12 minutes.  On days that I have a bit more time in bed, I use the Light Aura Plus so my neck gets some LED light therapy love as well. Then I head to the shower and always apply my skincare products on damp skin.

What are the benefits?

There are many reasons why estheticians incorporate LED light therapy into their treatments.  Have you experienced this? I have and it's wonderful to relax under the lights while a serum is soaking into my skin. Whether you want to feel refreshed or are struggling with hormonal break outs, there is a light setting for you.  LED light therapy masks promise the following benefits for your skin:

  • Total skin rejuvenation
  • Targets uneven skin tone
  • Clears acne
  • Regulates sebum production
  • Brightens
  • Collagen synthesis
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stimulates fibroblast activity
  • Tissue recovery and repair
  • Activates antioxidants in the skin
  • Minimizes pores
  • Fades scars

Remember, just like with all things consistency is key here! If you want to see the benefits of LED light therapy on your skin, you need to use it every day or at least 3 times a week. I'm 47 years old and definitely seeing the effects of peri-menopause on my skin.  I use my LED light therapy mask 4-5 times a week. Safety Considerations

While LED light therapy is generally safe, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions and avoid looking directly at the lights. Please don't try to do errands while wearing your LED mask. Just relax and enjoy the treatment! Some individuals may experience mild redness or sensitivity after treatment, but these side effects are usually temporary.
